- Updated: August 29, 2010
On the second day of the FIBA World Championships in Turkey, the favourites coasted home.
Kevin Durant scored 22 points, Kevin Love added 10 points and 11 rebounds off the bench, as the USA beat Slovenia 99-77 on Sunday in an opening-round tie.
“We were pleased with the effort of our team,” said USA head coach Mike Krzyzewski. “I thought they played us extremely well in the first quarter and then we went on a spurt … three 3-point shots that kind of broke it open. We beat a really good team tonight and we have to turn around and face another really good team tomorrow afternoon.”
The USA led by 14 at half-time after the Slovenes, roared on by a huge support, closed the gap. But Durant came through as the Americans moved to 2-0.
Linas Kleiza had 18 led Lithuania past Canada 70-68 in a thriller. Nets centre Yi Jianlin hit a game-best 26 points as China defeated Ivory Coast 83-73. While Angola best Jordan 79-65 and Croatia were 75-54 winners over Iran.
France followed up their shock victory over Spain with an 86-59 rout of Lebanon. And in a nail-biter, Argentina scraped past Australia 74-72 when Adam Gibson missed a late-second 3-point attempt for the Aussies.
