Four senior internationals have been named in the GB women’s squad for August’s World University Games in Shenzhen, China.

The 13-strong line-up, which will be coached by Damian Jennings, includes six members of last year’s successful under-20 European Championship Division B winning side.

With players eligible until one year after graduation, Chantelle Handy, Rose Anderson and Lauren Thomas-Johnson (pictured above), who are in the British team for the EuroBasket finals, are all included along side a fourth senior cap, Yemi Oyefuwa.

While Mairi Buchan, who pulled out of the line-up due to injury, will get another chance to stake her claim for an Olympic spot in the event which runs from August 11-23.

“I will continue to work hard,” said Buchan. “And have decided to treat the World University Games this August as my chance to prove myself to the senior coaching staff so that I can still have a chance at making the team next year for the Olympic Games in London.”

British Basketball has not entered a men’s squad for the World University Games due to both financial and logistical issues. However the Head of Performance at British Basketball, Warwick Cann, believes the Chinese trip will serve the women’s programme well on the road to 2016..

“It aims to bridge the gap between the youth and senior international representation,” he said. “The WUGs is a fantastic event which sees both members of the senior women’s team and the younger players come together to share knowledge and experience.

“This year the women have a tough draw as they are set to face the USA at the events but I’m sure with the preparation period in Cardiff, they will be ready for the competition.”

For the duration of the team’s preparation, they will be based in Cardiff at Glamorgan and Cardiff Universities.
