Mersey Tigers have been taken over by businessman Steve Brookfield, as the BBL champions bid to emerge unscathed from their off-court problems of last season.

The new owner, who has acquired the Liverpool side from Gary Townsend, has a cluster of issues to contend with, including the prospect of legal action from a number of players who, MVP understands, are considering legal action over unpaid salaries.

It is also expected that the Tigers new playing venue will be confirmed shortly with Huyton Sports Centre the most likely base.

Brookfield was unavailable for comment but a club spokesman, in a statement, said: “The key motivation was to retain a professional basketball presence in Liverpool, and not only that, but to ensure the development of the sport in the area.

“We aim to kick on the community side of the club and already have started to work closely with various organisations in the community, with the ultimate aim of ensuring there is a basketball team in every school in Merseyside.

“We are now actively seeking partners and sponsors to assist us with the development of basketball in Merseyside, and help us deliver our range of programmes, such as Hoops 4 Health.”
