EUROBASKET: QUARTERS TAKE SHAPE
- Updated: September 8, 2011
Macedonia and Russia secured quarter-final berths at EuroBasket on Thursday as they remained unbeaten.
Russia 79 Finland 60
Russia cast aside Finland to keep their perfect record intact and secure a spot in the quarter-finals of EuroBasket with a 79-60 victory.
A 14-4 run in the first half gave David Blatt’s men the platform to surge clear and after they had won the second quarter 15-6 to build a 33-20 half-time advantage, they cruised away, led by 14 points from Andrei Kirilenko.
Macedonia 65 Georgia 63
Macedonia secured their spot in the quarter-finals of EuroBasket with a 65-63 victory over Georgia on Thursday.
The Macedonians, led by 25 points from Siena guard Bo McCalebb, led 29-26 at half-time but powered away in the third quarter to remain unbeaten.
Georgia, led by 20 from ex-NBA forward Niikolz Tskitishvili, now face a mammoth task to progress.
Greece 69 Slovenia 60
Greece used a late push to see off Slovenia and move closer to a spot in the last eight.
Niko Zisis had a game-high 19 points including a three-pointer with 10 seconds left which put the game beyond reach.
But the Slovenes had rallied from 35-20 down in the second quarter to go in front late in the third during a 9-0 run which put them up 46-44 headed into the final period before they succumbed at the last.
Jaka Lakovic had 14 for Slovenia who are now 1-2.
