EUROBASKET: HOSTS FEELING BLEUS

 

The race for the last eight stepped up on Friday in Group E but France marched on, defeating Lithuania 73-67 to stay unbeaten. 

Nando de Colo hit a a game-high 21 points as Vince Collet’s side overturned a 46-43 deficit heading into what turned into an action-filled fourth quarter.

Simas Jasaitas hit 13 for Lithuania who must beat Germany on Sunday to definitely advance.

Germany 73 Turkey 67

Needing a win over Turkey, Germany pulled out all the stops to ensure their hopes remain alive at EuroBasket. For once, it didn’t rely on Dirk Nowitzki coming up big.

Down 12 in the second quarter, the Germans roared back to snatch victory in the fourth quarter with Chris Kaman hitting a game-high 20 points.

But it was key shots from Phillip Schwethelm down the stretch which mattered most as his side cling onto the shot at the Olympics Nowitzki craves.

The Dallas Mavericks star had 19 points but sat out much of the second half after picking up 3 fouls in the opening 15 minutes.

Turkey must now defeat Serbia in their last group game to have any shot of making the last eight.

Spain 84 Serbia 59

Spain ran out comfortable winners in the re-run of EuroBasket 2009’s final, defeating Serbia 84-69 with secure their spot in the quarter-finals.

Pau Gasol had 26 points and 8 rebounds as the defending champions built on a 43-32 half-time lead with a third quarter push that left the Serbs reeling – and in real danger of exiting the competition.
