MERSEY PUT ON HOLD AS TALKS CONTINUE
- Updated: September 28, 2011
Mersey Tigers have had their opening game of the season postponed by the British Basketball League as attempts continue to save the reigning champions from collapse.
As a consequence, Cheshire Jets will now host Sheffield in the BBL Trophy this Sunday (October 2) while BBL officials continue crisis talks with the club’s new ownership.
“The BBL can confirm that they are currently working with the Mersey Tigers Basketball Club,” said a spokesperson. Calls to request comment from Mersey were not returned.
The club, which had only confirmed the signing of two players, failed to fulfil any of their pre-season fixtures and are still understood to have an unpaid wage bill from last term when they claimed the domestic treble.
It was confirmed earlier in the day that James Jones, who had been expected to re-sign, had joined Plymouth.
