HEAD COACH SEARCH DOWN TO SHORT LIST
- Updated: February 17, 2013
Existing senior men’s assistant coach Paul Mokeski and Maccabi Tel Aviv assistant Guy Goodes are among those who have applied for the role of successor to Chris Finch with a number of NBA personnel also understood to have put their names forward.
However Goodes – who has a UK passport – comes with the endorsement of his boss David Blatt, who led Russia to Olympic bronze in London last summer.
“I know the British national team programme because we’ve played against them a number of times this past summer,” Blatt told Eurobasket.com.
”I had the chance to meet the people on board, so when they made it known to me through their search committee that they were looking for a coach, I recommended Guy Goodes because I strongly believe in him and know what great possibilities he presents as a national team coach.”
Damian Jennings has emerged as the hot favourite to step up and take over from Tom Maher as senior women’s head coach with the Australian’s departure expected to be formally confirmed in the coming weeks.
However MVP has learnt that the governing body’s outgoing performance director Chris Spice authorised the unusual, and potentially expensive, step of utilising an international recruitment agency to identify suitable candidates.
The original interview process was suspended before Christmas after basketball’s funding was withdrawn by UK Sport.
Both the Under-20 men and women are also set for fresh faces at the helm following poor performances last summer.
