Matt Johnson 568Matt Johnson has been named as head coach of Great Britain’s Under-20 women for this summer’s European Championships.

The ex-Reading boss replaces Dutchman Frans Griffioen who has been axed in the wake of last year’s disastrous campaign that saw GB relegated to Division B.

Johnson was assistant to Damian Jennings when the side originally gained promotion to Division A for the first time and had their best ever finish when they came eighth in Europe in 2011. His number two will be Lee Davie with the highly-regarded Sarah Wagstaff installed as team manager.

“I am happy to be given the opportunity to coach the GB Under-20 team and continue the great work done in the past few years,” said Johnson. “It will be a good challenge. We have great culture from our players so I look forward to leading them in 2013.”

His challenge will come in the Bulgarian city of Albena where the championships will be held from July 4-14.

British Basketball’s Head of Performance, Warwick Cann said: “I think we have a good staff group to help drive our GB under-20 women back into Division A. The playing squad will be announced shortly as our preparation will begin in earnest in a few months.”

Johnson and Davie were among a group of young British coaches who recently travelled to Serbia on a developmental trip to observe a training session of Euroleague club Partizan Belgrade under coach Dusko Vujosevic, as well as a junior tournament which involved the best U18 teams from Serbia, Croatia, France, Italy, Germany and the Czech Republic.
