JENNINGS NAMES INITIAL GB SQUAD
- Updated: April 26, 2013
New Great Britain women’s coach Damian Jennings has named his initial squad for this summer’s EuroBasket campaign that will report to Guildford next week for training camp.
And it will be a mix of veterans and new faces that will battle out for a place in his final 12-strong roster for France in June, with just nine of last year’s 12 Olympians back in the hunt.
That means no place for retired pair Nat Stafford and Julie Page, nor Jeneya Wade-Fray, who is injured.
However a number of Jennings’ former charges at Under-20 level have been included, with Ella Clark, Erin McGarrachan, Renee Busch, Christina Gaskin and leading prospect Cheridene Green all getting a chance to stake a claim.
Veteran pair Roz Mason and Steph Gandy are recalled while Jo Leedham is named despite uncertainty over her availability.
“The EuroBasket creates a great test for us post Olympics and we have been able to select a real blend of experience and youthful talent,” said Jennings.
“With the early timing of EuroBasket there will always be challenges but all the GB performance staff are looking forward to working with the selected squad and preparing for this great summer ahead.”
Squad: Dominique Allen (Bologna, Italy), Rose Anderson (Cercle Sainte Paul Rezé Basket, France), Renee Busch (Penn University, USA), Kimberly Butler (SK Cesis, Latvia), Ella Clark (Long Beach State University, USA), Stefanie Collins (Cardiff Archers), Temi Fagbenle (Harvard University, USA), Stephanie Gandy (Sheffield Hatters), Christina Gaskin (Fordham University, USA), Cheridene Green (Sevenoaks Suns), Chantelle Handy (Mersin, Turkey), Georgia Jones (Cluj, Romania), Johannah Leedham (Bourges, France), Roz Mason (Barking Abbey), Erin Mcgarrahan (Houston Baptist University, USA), Harriet Ottewell-Soulsby (Loughborough University), Kristie Shiels (Calgary University, Canada), Azania Stewart (Pesci, Hungary), Lauren Thomas-Johnson (Sheffield Hatters), Rachael Vanderwal (University of Limerick, Ireland).
