PRUNTY SET FOR EXIT AS GB END EUROS WINLESS

Great Britain delivered a gutsy display but ended their miserable EuroBasket qualification campaign without a win after losing 74-68 to Bosnia in Sarajevo.

Ben Mockford scored 19 points and Scots star Kieron Achara added 13 as Joe Prunty’s side threatened an upset before the hosts closed with an 11-5 run to seal their place in next year’s finals.

Brooklyn Nets forward Mirza Teletovic notched a game-best 25 as Bosnia, who led by as much as 12 in the second period, were forced to fend off a late GB rally in what is set to be coach Joe Prunty’s last game in charge with team chiefs revealing they can no longer afford the American.

With GB winless – and out of next summer’s finals as well as Rio 2016 – there’s little hope that UK Sport will undertake a U-turn and restore its funding, leaving the kitty almost empty.

And that’s certain to mean no new deal for Prunty, the associate head coach of the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks, along with several other members of the backroom staff.

British Basketball chairman Roger Moreland said: “I don’t want to lose Joe. But the reality is if you have no money, you can’t pay people. I don’t think people have understood the seriousness of the situation. Without help from UK Sport or the public purse, you can’t run programmes the way you need.

“UK Sport’s mantra is no-compromise. We’ve had to compromise this summer. We’ve had to do the minimum and this is what we’ve ended up with. We can’t prepare the teams the way we would want.”
