Serbia will face Slovenia in Sunday’s EuroBasket final in Istanbul.

The Olympic and World Cup runners-up earned themselves a shot at finally landing a major title by holding off Russia 87-79 in Friday’s semi-final with a fourth quarter surge that saw them move onwards.

A 14-0 run in the second gave the Serbs the surge they required.

Despite a game-high 33 points from Alexey Shved, the Russians’ return to international respectability was stopped in its tracks even after they overturned a double-digit deficit to trail by just two midway through the final period.

However Shved missed a three-point attempt that would have given them the lead. And the momentum reversed immediately, Vasilje Micic connecting to give Serbia breathing space and they held on tightly, paced by 22 from Bodgan Bogdanovic.

Russia will face Spain for third place on Sunday afternoon. However the average attendance for the two semi-finals was just 5,095.
