LEEDHAM SIDELINED FOR EURO DOUBLE

Jo Leedham-Warner has been ruled out of Great Britain’s EuroBasket qualifiers against Portugal and Israel.

In a blow to the team’s chances of staying on track for the 2019 finals, the Villeneuve D’Asq guard has been advised to withdraw to rest an injury that forced her to sit out this weekend’s action with her club.

“It’s a precaution,” she said. “And to take rest for flared-up plantar fasciitis.”

Great Britain players will congregate for camp this week ahead of their game against Portugal on Saturday 10 February and Israel on Wednesday 14 February. No-one has yet been added to the squad which will now lean even more heavily on Temi Fagbenle.

“We are obviously disappointed, since Jo is a quality player, has vast experience at the elite level and is a centrepiece of the Women’s programme,” confirmed performance director, Mark Clark.

“However, there are two things we have to consider here and that is firstly, it is important that our leading players stay healthy to sustain their careers at the top level.

“Secondly, while it might hurt us, we also have a talented roster and many other players who will hopefully step up and help fill the void.”
