Great Britain’s women avoided the wooden spoon at the European Under-20 Championships.

But they needed one last effort after crushing Romania 72-50 in their final game in Podgorica.

Karen Burton’s side, who were led by 21 points from Scottish guard Sarah Thomson, never trailed after sweeping 6-0 ahead and coasted to their first win of the tournament at the ninth attempt to finish in ninth place of Division B – the first competitive victory by any GB team this summer.

Great Britain’s men will bid to break their duck in their European U20 campaign against Croatia on Monday as they go into the consolation play-offs to retain their Division A status.

Doug Leichner’s men ended the group stages in Lignano without a victory after losing 56-49 to Lithuania on Saturday.

“We keep talking about the positive things we have done and the weaknesses we have to improve on,” Leichner said.

“Now we are in a very difficult relegation tournament and we are all well aware of the implications and significance of it.”
