MENSAH BONSU POPS UP IN FRANCE

Great Britain forward Pops Mensah Bonsu has agreed a deal with French Pro A side ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne for the remainder of the season.

The Londoner, who was released by the NBA’s New Orleans Hornets last month, is slated to make his debut against Cholet on February 26.

“We are delighted to welcome him,” said Asvel coach Nordine Ghrib.

“Pops filled our need for speed, defence and intensity. He doesn’t give up on the play. However he’s a very athletic player with good offensive qualities.

“His physical presence is going to help us defensively in the absence of Bangaly Fofana.”

Meanwhile Mensah Bonsu’s GB team-mate Luol Deng has finished ninth in the voting for the 2010 European Player of the Year, FIBA Europe have confirmed.

Milos Teodosic of Serbia, the Most Valuable Player of last season’s Euroleague, has claimed the award with NBA All Stars Pau Gasol and Dirk Nowitzki in second and third respectively.
