GRAND OLD DUKE! RAIDERS INK FORBES

Plymouth Raiders have signed Great Britain international Germayne Forbes after the London-born guard was released from a brief stint with French N1 side Challans.

The former Gonzaga standout had a previous spell in the BBL with the Scottish Rocks, when he scored a season-high 38 points against the Raiders.

He has also had overseas spells in Hungary and Switzerland but lasted only a brief spell in France’s third tier this term.

“It’s great to have a player with his ability and experience on board,” said Plymouth head coach Gavin Love.

“For medical reasons he hasn’t played the last couple of months, but he’s in great shape now so this is a really good fit for both Germayne and us. He gives us a lot of versatility at the guard position, as he can play the point guard and slide over to play the shooting guard equally as well.

“We’ve never had a Team GB player here in Plymouth, so it’s an exciting time to be around the team. As with Chez (Marks) and Jerome (Gumbs), it’s going to take him a couple of weeks to settle in completely.”

Forbes made his Great Britain debut at the World Student Games in 2001 and he was part of England’s bronze medal-winning team at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006.

And after a spell out injured, he will now look to regain full fitness in his native land.

“I’m really excited about getting the all clear to play again,” Forbes said. “That type of situation makes you appreciate the game a little more. This team is a talented team that needs a little bit of experience and that’s where I see myself fitting in. I’m just excited to get back on the court.”
