LEBRON KOPS PART OF LIVERPOOL FC
- Updated: April 6, 2011
LeBron James has acquired a minority stake in Liverpool FC after his sports marketing firm signed a deal with the footy club's owners, Fenway Sports Group.
According to The Wall Street Journal, it's part of a plan to build James' portfolio internationally. The two-time MVP is said to be keen to gain equity in companies as, until now, his commercial interests have largely been limited to sponsorship and endorsement deals.
''We're not interested in talent or athlete representation but we think he is one of the most remarkable athletes of his time,'' FSG – and Liverpool – chairman Tom Werner told the paper. ''We believe we can open doors for LeBron and LeBron can open doors for us."
LeBron said: ''The first time I stepped on an NBA court I became a businessman. This is a great opportunity for me.''
Referring to Liverpool's title honours James added: ''Eighteen championships. I see myself trying to do the same things they have.'
Forbes magazine lists Liverpool as the 6th most valuable football team in the world.
