Great Britain’s women recorded their first win of the summer in Guildford, defeating Latvia 67-64 to secure third place in the Standard Life Invitational.

A storming second quarter looked set to put the tournament hosts on course for a comfortable victory as they secured a 40-21 half-time advantage.

However the Latvians stormed back in the fourth quarter and threatened an upset before Stef Collins hit two late free-throws to end their rally and boost GB’s preparations for next month’s Eurobasket finals.

Natalie Stafford hit 18 points to lead Britain, who travel to Turkey for three more warm-up friendlies next week. Azania Stewart, in an impressive inside display, added 10 points with 8 rebounds. Gunta Basko, with 15, paced the Latvians who finished bottom of the standings.

“The ournament has been great and we’ve had the chance to play against some very good teams,” said GB coach Tom Maher. “Moving forward, we’ve got to work much more efficiently and work hard together to create that magic, I know we can be a great team.”

Earlier Cuba defeated Germany 58-51 to win the four-nation event.
