STAFFORD BLAST SECURES GB BOOST
- Updated: June 15, 2011
Great Britain’s women grabbed a thrilling 75-73 overtime win over Slovakia on Wednesday night in their final warm-up game ahead of the EuroBasket finals.
Nat Stafford hit a game-high 23 points for GB who now travel to Poland ahead of their European opener against Belarus on Saturday.
It was a welcome boost for Tom Maher’s side as they broke a three-game losing streak, holding their nerve to come from behind in the fourth to level before prevailing in OT.
Down 49-46 at half-time, the hosts surged in the third period. However with Kim Butler providing a defensive block and Rose Anderson bringing energy off the bench, Britain hit back to level at 65-65 at the end of regulation and won out to avenge last week’s loss to the Slovaks in Riga.
“It was a great defensive effort and we’re definitely going to get better from here,” said GB performance chief Chris Spice.
Chantelle Handy and Kim Butler added 10 points apiece.
