Great Britain’s women began the second phase of their European Championship bid in Novi Sad with a 44-36 defeat to Italy on Monday.

Katrina Chiemeka had 10 points and 8 rebounds in n a low scoring tussle which saw the Italians hit the final five points to take the win as Damian Jennings side shot blanks from three point range.

Italy breezed into a 13-3 lead in the opening eight minutes, but Britain rallied and a pair of free throws from Temi Fagbenle saw them go into half-time trailing 21-20.

GB briefly led but Italy went 33-27 ahead when Laura Spreafico sank a free throw late in the third quarter.

A three-pointer from Katrin Chiemeka cut the gap to 39-36 with 3:22 to go but they would get no closer.

“Our offensive decisions and technical execution let us down throughout the second half, but these players are very analytical and want to improve,” said Jennings.

“So I have no doubt we will make improvements is this area. I wouldn’t write us off yet.”

GB now face France on Tuesday.

Federica Tognalini and Alessandra Tava had 13 points each for Italy.
