DUTCH DEFEAT BUT GB INTO QUARTERS
- Updated: July 13, 2011
Great Britain finished the group stages of the European Under-20 Championships with a 70-66 defeat to the Netherlands on Wednesday in Novi Sad.
But with Italy beating Latvia 70-61, Damian Jennings’ side finished fourth in their group and advanced into the quarter-finals, where they will now face Russia on Thursday.
Tami Fagbenle had 14 points and 11 rebounds for GB who rallied from 12 down in the third quarter to level, only to succumb to a late Dutch surge.
It was not enough to save the Netherlands from elimination but, paced by Chatilla van Grinsven’s 19 points and 13 rebounds, they built on a 35-32 half-time lead.
Her free throw with 3:39 left in the third opened the gap to 53-41 but GB rallied and a three-pointer from Kristie Sheils tied the game at 63-63 with 3:32 remaining.
But the Dutch made the game safe from the foul line despite Fagbenle’s efforts.
