AUTOMATIC EUROBASKET SPOT UP IN AIR

MVP has learnt that no decision will be taken until next year on whether one of the home nations will gain automatic entry for EuroBasket 2013, should the current Great Britain programme splinter after the Olympics.

FIBA Europe has revealed its seedings for the qualifiers for the next European finals, with GB absent from the list due to its current status as an automatic bid by virtue of its spot at London 2012.

However, with England Basketball – and its counterparts in Scotland and Wales – required to decide by next June on whether to merge their international teams in perpetuity, or return to fielding three separate sides, doubts remain over whether ranking points, and tournament invites, would be passed onto England, whose place was originally assumed by Great Britain in 2006.

It is understood that the potentially contentious mechanism will be placed in the hands of FIBA, which takes responsibility for membership. “It is an issue for Geneva,” said a source.

Great Britain youth sides, and the home countries, have also learned their destinations for next summer.

GB’s Under-20 Men will go to Sofia, Bulgaria while the Women head for Hungary.

Newly promoted England’s Under 18 women will play in Romania with their male counterparts, still in the B Division, off to Bosnia.

At Under 16 level, where England’s teams earning Division A spots by coming runner-up in the 2011 tournaments, the women will travel to an event co-hosted by Latvia and Lithuania and the girls to Hungary.

Scotland and Wales have yet to confirm their under-age plans but the new senior Small Countries tournaments, which replace the old Division C, will be held in San Marino (men) and Macedonia (women) with dates yet to be confirmed.
