Great Britain were thrashed 87-51 by Russia in a friendly in San Antonio on Monday night as Chris Finch gave some of his fringe players a chance to make their case for inclusion in his Olympic squad.
Dan Clark led GB with 12 points with Eric Boateng grabbing a double-double of 11 points and 14 rebounds but their side remains winless in their first three tune-ups for London.
“Regardless of the score, this provides a great opportunity to evaluate,” said Finch. “We created some good scoring opportunities but weren’t able to finish.”
Luol Deng, Pops Mensah Bonsu, Joel Freeland and Rob Archibald did not dress for this game.
But Russia coach David Blatt was satisfied with his team’s showing as they build towards the Olympic qualifying tournament.
“In training, the guys work well, and today in a game they did all that was required of them,” he said.
“And while the British team did not play at full strength and , perhaps, somewhat simplified our task, I can say that our team moved the ball well today, but to protect the well showed a fairly high level.
“In general, I am pleased with this game, but I must emphasize that no one carried away by the result. This match – only part of the preparation, training, on which the early to draw any global conclusions.”
