TURKISH DELIGHT AS GB RUN ENDS
- Updated: June 17, 2012
Great Britain lost 73-54 to Turkey in the final game of the four-nation invitational tournament  in Ankara on Sunday as the hosts claimed top spot.
The Turks, EuroBasket runners-up last year, led 30-28 at half-time but opened up a double-digital advantage headed into the fourth.
And they underlined their threat when the Olympic qualifying event takes place on home soil to cruising clear with an 8-0 run, paced by 18 points from Quanitra Hollingsworth.
Jo Leedham had a team-high 14 points for GB, earning the tournament MVP prize, but head coach Tom Maher admits better is needed.
“We were competitive for almost three quarters but there was too much slippage, too many unforced mistakes,” said a disappointed Maher. “It’s too much possession we gave away to stay in touch, so in the end we lost to the better team.”
Earlier, South Korea beat Argentina 67-59 to take third place in the tournament.
Maher’s side now move onto the Czech Republic where they take on their hosts in back to back friendlies on Tuesday and Wednesday.
