MIKE’S THE MAN! LAKERS SIGN D’ANTONI
- Updated: November 12, 2012
Forget Phil…the Los Angeles Lakers have announced they’ve signed Mike D’Antoni as the club’s new head coach.
Lakers spokesman John Black said that team owner Jerry Buss, executive vice president Jim Buss and general manager Mitch Kupchak were unanimous that the former Phoenix Suns and New York Knicks coach was the best man for the job “at this time.”
Reports from numerous sources suggest that Phil Jackson, the fan favourite who led the Lakers to five titles, was asking for too much to reprise his old role – including a salary ranging from $10 to 15 million annually, significant say in personnel decisions and the option to skip selected road games!
Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash have both expressed support for the idea of playing for D’Antoni, who was Nash’s coach in Phoenix when the point guard won consecutive MVP awards in 2005 and 2006.
