Great Britain v Australia Van Osstrum 568Devon van Oostrum came up trumps in overtime as Great Britain defeated Puerto Rico 68-63 on Monday evening in a closed-door friendly in London.

After the sides had ended regulation level at 60-60, the Spanish-based guard – who had a team-high 15 points – converted a three-point play in the extra period to seal victory for the hosts.

New GB coach Joe Prunty, in his second game in charge, used 15 of his 17-man squad with only the injured Dan Clark, plus Andrew Lawrence rested.

And with Kieron Achara and Drew Sullivan – the standouts of Sunday’s narrow win over the Puerto Ricans – utilised only briefly in the first half, the boss spread the minutes with Orlan Jackman, Gareth Murray, Liam Potter and Jamell Anderson all pulling on the vest for the first time.

GB led 32-23 at half-time after going as much as 14 clear but gradually their guests pulled back to level in the fourth.

Ali Fraser added 10 points with Carlos Emory scoring a game-best 17 for Puerto Rico.

An unofficial match, no caps will be rewarded, and at least one player is expected to be released from the roster before GB travel to Helsinki for Thursday’s friendly with Finland.

However, in a scrappy contest, Prunty will take the positives in a second win over the second-string visitors.

Achara tweeted: “Team pulled out a gutsy OT win against Puerto Rico tonight. Whole squad saw quality minutes and showed why they wear the GB jersey.”
