JENNINGS FUTURE WITH GB IN DOUBT
- Updated: January 15, 2014
Great Britain women’s head coach Damian Jennings has been told to re-apply for his position, despite leading the side to the cusp of a quarter-final place at last summer’s EuroBasket.
It’s been confirmed that the Englishman, who coaches collegiate basketball in Canada, could lose his role with the post set to be advertised this week.
“I would expect him to be an applicant for the position,” said British Basketball’s national teams director Warwick Cann, who has commissioned a head-hunting agency to look at other potential recruits.
With Joe Prunty’s return as senior men’s coach confirmed, an approach has been made to retain assistants Guy Goodes and Nate Reinking.
“There’s a general commitment from all that staff to come back again,” Cann added.
Douglas Leichter will continue as Great Britain Under-20 men’s coach after leading the side into Division B, although it is understood his bench staff will be changed.
While the GB Under-20 women will have a fourth coach in as many summers with Matt Johnson’s departure.
“Matt’s made the decision to step aside based on business and family,” Cann said. “We’re currently advertising for that position.”
Cann, along with British Performance Basketball chairman Roger Moreland and ex-performance director Chris Spice met with UK Sport last week to discuss funding going forward.
