COFFINO CONFIRMED AS CHESHIRE COACH

COFFINO 568Cheshire Phoenix have replaced John Lavery with former NBA D-League coach John Coffino, in a move first revealed by MVP.

The American, who has signed a two-year deal, is understood to have recruited a number of players in tandem with Cheshire director, the ex-London Towers coach Robbie Peers, with the expectation that he would assume the playcaller’s role at the Northgate Arena.

“The chance to develop players and to help expand appreciation and enjoyment of basketball in the community is an opportunity I could not turn down. I am especially pleased to associate with a franchise that embraces the local community as a valuable member of its extended family and values the development of its local youth an essential component of its overall mission.”

The New York native, 51, had a decade’s experience in Division I college basketball before taking the helm of the Albuquerque Thunderbirds of the D-League for two years.

He then spent a year in Qatar before joining the Albany Legends of the Independent Basketball Association, although his current Twitter biography states he is the Head Coach & Director of Basketball Operations, Dankind Academy, in Kenya, a humanitarian project based in Nairobi.

Lavery will step down undertake assistant duties in tandem with running a development programmes.
