ICELANDERS ROCKS GB IN OPENER

KieronAchara and MylesHessonjumpforpossessionintheStandardLifeGBMensvictoryoverIsraelatEuroBasket2013.JPG_lowGreat Britain suffered a disastrous 83-70 drubbing to Iceland in their opening EuroBasket qualifier in Reykjavik.

Kieron Achara scored 16 and Dan Clark 20 as the visitors rallied from trailing 20-4 in the opening quarter to lead 49-43 in the third.

But after the sides were level with 11 minutes left, a 23-5 burst saw the Icelanders surge clear to leave a stunned GB in a deep hole in their three-team group with favourites Bosnia coming to London on Wednesday.

Haukur Pálsson hit a game-high 24 points for the hosts who went inside to punish Joe Prunty’s men who left Matt Bryan-Amaning and Ben Mockford on the sidelines.

And Britain, whose lingering hopes of reaching Rio 2016 rest on reaching next year’s finals, badly missed NBA duo Luol Deng and Joel Freeland as their challenge faded badly.
