Luol Deng started his Miami Heat career with a victory over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday, despite an injury scare.

The ex-Great Britain captain went off briefly after falling awkwardly on his ankle but returned to play 30 minutes in the 107-95 win for last season’s beaten NBA Finallists as they officially began the post-LeBron era,

“I’m just happy to be playing basketball again in front of this great crowd and this great city,” said Deng, who had 12 points and four bounds.

“We have so much going for ourselves right now. I like to win. It doesn’t matter how we do it. We can get better.”

Washington were without the suspended Nene and DeJuan Blair.

Elsewhere GB forward Joel Freeland was scoreless in just six minutes off the bench as Portland thrashed the Oklahoma City Thunder 106-89.
