A group of Londoners, masquerading as the NBA’s Spurs, have tried to make a basket from a distance of 14 metres.

The sportsmen, known as the Tottenham Hot Spurs, are believed to have taken up hoops after learning they had driven near a supermarket once frequented by ex-San Antonio forward Pops Mensah-Bonsu.

Joined by some Americans who had played the game as children before opting, inexplicably, to sign up to play soccer when moving to the UK, a number of them attempted to hit the target after finding one of the nets long abandoned under the Outdoor Basketball Initiative while warming up for their weekly five-a-sides at the Enfield Centre.

Brad Friedel, from Ohio, said: “I grew up in Cleveland, basketball is one of the main sports.”

Then they went back to playing football.
