Expect more competitive home ties for Great Britain’s women from next winter after FIBA approved a new system of qualification for EuroBasket Women 2017.

In parallel with the shake-up of the men’s international calendar, qualifiers will be staged in windows during the season with the first two plugged in for 21 and 25 November 2015 and 20 and 24 February 2016 – and the third during November 2016.

Teams are expected to play at least two games in each window with the draw to reach what will be a 16-team finals tournament taking place this summer.

With most of GB’s women playing within Europe, it should see full-strength squads available with British Basketball also earning the leeway to add a warm-up friendly in each block.

2017 will also be the first Europeans where there will be no automatic spots for teams heading to the previous Olympic Games.

FIBA also confirmed the 2019 men’s World Cup will be held in either China or the Philippines with a decision to come this June.

Germany, Turkey and Qatar have signalled their interest in the 2023 edition.
