Doug Leichner is to step down as Great Britain’s Under-20 men’s coach, it has been confirmed.
The popular American, who took over in 2013, led the side to the most successful run of its brief history, earning promotion into Division A with an exciting young group led by Devon van Oostrum.
In 2014, GB retained its position with an unprecedented 11th place at the European Championships but, with a number of key prospects opting out, they suffered a narrow relegation last summer despite finishing above traditional powers including Russia, Croatia and Greece.
“National team coaches have a short lifespan and after three overall successful years, I have decided to turn the reigns over to someone else,†Leichner said. “I’m thankful for the opportunity and thoroughly enjoyed my experience with GB U20.â€
British Basketball have begun the recruitment process for a replacement for this summer’s tournament in Halkidiki, Greece.
