DENG’S STOCK AT LAKERS SINKS

The Los Angeles Lakers have effectively brought Luol Deng’s season to a close.

The former Great Britain forward, along with Russian centre Timofey Mozgov, will be benched to give the majority of playing time over the final 15 games to the team’s younger players, ESPN reported.

31-year-old Deng, who hasn’t played for GB since 2010, has averaged only 7.6 points and 5.3 rebounds in nearly 27 minutes this season after joining on a four-year, $72 million deal last summer.

The Lakers, who have the second-worst record in the NBA, will retain their first round draft pick only if it stays in the top three following the forthcoming Lottery. Otherwise it is owed to Philadelphia 76ers.

It is unclear whether the move would affect Deng’s availability to return to British colours for September’s EuroBasket in Istanbul.
