3X3 HOOPS ADDED TO OLYMPICS
- Updated: June 9, 2017
3×3 basketball will feature at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, it has been confirmed.
The decision by the International Olympic Committee follows almost a decade of lobbying by governing body FIBA and features among a number of additions for the programme which have been approved.
64 athletes – 32 males and females – will take part although the extra format, including qualification, has yet to be announced.
“This is a historic day for FIBA and 3×3”, FIBA Secretary General and IOC Member Patrick Baumann said. “It is the recognition of 10 years of hard work to codify the rules of 3×3 and to innovate with a unique 3×3 digital platform and player ranking system that bring together athletes with private and institutional organizers in a worldwide network of FIBA organized or sanctioned 3×3 events.”
The move will not see a reduction in the current number of teams playing in the traditional format of the game at the Olympics.
