British Basketball is set to appoint Joe Prunty’s successor as Great Britain men’s head coach next week.
It is understood four playcallers have interviewed by British Basketball Federation officials for the role which will become vacant when current Milwaukee Bucks assistant Prunty steps down after next month’s EuroBasket.
Although an official announcement may come after the tournament, it is expected the chosen candidate will be offered the chance to go to the finals in Istanbul to get to know the GB squad. But even though Tony Garbelotto has emerged as one of the favourites, BBF director Mark Clark insists calls to put a homegrown coach at the helm were not top of mind.
“The important things is getting the right coach,†he said. “We have good people coming through as we’ve seen with our Under-18 and 20 teams this summer, as well as in the BBL. And whatever happens, we need to make sure the new coach is involved in the British game.â€
