STEWART BACK ON FLOOR AS GB CHASE EURO STAGE

Azania Stewart is set to win her 100th cap as Great Britain bid to reach EuroBasket Women 2019.

The veteran forward has opted to retire from club basketball this season but still features in Chema Buceta’s 16-strong initial squad for this month’s qualifiers against Greece and Portugal in Manchester.

However, Stewart has indicated the ties will bring down the curtain on her career.

“It’s time to hang up my shoes but I want to thank you basketball from the bottom of my heart,” she said in an Instagram post. “I will always have love for you.. P.S 100th cap in November.. going out with a bang.”

With a 3-1 record that has the side joint top of their group, two wins would take GB automatically through to next summer’s finals, co-hosted by Serbia and Latvia.

Buceta also has Polkowice duo Jo Leedham and Temi Fagbenle at his disposal ahead of training camp in Manchester, starting on November 11.

“It is a great place to be in at this stage of the qualification round,” the GB coach said. “This group of players have worked hard together and gained vital experience, as this campaign has progressed. They have come through tough games to put themselves into this position.”

GB host Greece on the 17th and Portugal on the 21st but finishing second in a tight group would leave the team in a lottery for qualification depending on groups elsewhere.
