FLOURNOY’S FUTURE STILL IN PLAY

Newcastle Eagles hope Fab Flournoy will remain as head coach next season, and beyond.

Around the BBL, it has been widely expected that the New Yorker – still playing at the age of 45 – will join the NBA’s Toronto Raptors in some capacity after spending an informal stint on Nick Nurse’s staff in last year’s summer league.

Flournoy’s links with his former coach at Birmingham Bullets remain strong.

But Eagles owner Paul Blake admits he hasn’t given up on retaining the services of the most successful playcaller in BBL history who has picked up 24 major trophies, including seven league titles, since he took charge in 2002.

“Time will tell,” he said. “Fab might still be playing for Newcastle when he’s 65. But we’ve always said that if it comes to him leaving, it will be on an absolutely amicable basis because of what he’s achieved. He’s won more than his fair share of trophies over a long period and that’s going to be hard to match.

“But we have a new venue. We’re settling in. My hope is he’ll stay but if he jumps into pastures new, he’ll go with our best wishes.”

Eagles still retain an outside chance of winning the league but trail London Lions with two weeks of the season left.
