BIG GUNS RETURN IN BOOSTER

Great Britain’s women edged out Canada 93-90 in Manchester on Tuesday.

With Jo Leedham contributing 21 points, nine assists and nine rebounds in the the first of a friendly double-header, the hosts broke the stalemate in the fourth with the additions of Temi Fagbenle and Karlie Samuelson fortifying GB’s roster.

And although the visitors – travelling without their trio of current WNBA players – led 49-44 at half-time, they were vanquished as Chema Buceta’s side picked up their first victory in the build-up to EuroBasket, with the sides meeting again at Belle Vue on Wednesday.

Samuelson added 18 points in a contest of 19 lead changes. Aislinn Kong paced Canada with 19 points.

Buceta, who had hinted his 12 against the tourists will be heading to Riga, omitted Kennedy Leonard, Nicolette Fong Lyew Quee and – surprisingly – Savannah Wilkinson from his 15-strong squad.

Meanwhile, FIBA Europe have announced Commission appointments with British Basketball’s operational director Nicky Shaw on the Women’s Commission and GB now given a place on the Small Nations Commission through fellow BBF director Eddie McKinley.
