SLOVENIAN OPENER FOR GB

Chema Buceta insists Great Britain’s women are ready to open their summer campaign with two friendlies in Slovenia next weekend.

His side will take on their hosts in Trbovlje on Friday evening before facing Sweden 24 hours later in Lasko when Rachael Vanderwal is set to win her 100th cap.

13 players will be taken on the trip, the opening competitive jousts after the full squad – minus Temi Fagbenle and Karlie Samuelson – reported to training camp in Manchester last weekend. Abigail Roscoe and Samantha Roscoe, late additions, have been left off the roster.

“Now we will do our best to compete at the highest level against the best teams in Europe,” Buceta said.

“We know it is going to be difficult, but we will face it with ambition, courage, team attitude and self-confidence.”

GB host Canada in two home warm-up fixtures on June 18 (closed door) and 19 (open) in Manchester before facing Sweden and Spain in Torneo de Fuenlabrada in Madrid which starts three days later.

Meanwhile Karl Brown is set to be named at the new coach of Great Britain’s Under-20 men, accepting the job on a voluntary basis after Marc Steutel was forced to step down.

Brown, a former team-mate of Basketball England’s new performance supremo Steve Bucknall, is currently involved with junior club Leicester Warriors.
