Lloyd Gardner has been named as the new head coach of London City Royals.

The former Great Britain assistant replaces Jay Williams who was axed last week for what were termed as “non-basketball” reasons despite winning the BBL Trophy.

However Gardner, who has no previous experience in the professional ranks, will now move to take the helm from his current position in a development role at Barking Abbey Academy where he has helped bring through a number of young British talents.

As a player, he was a junior cap for England and played professionally for the London Towers and London Leopards in the BBL.

However MVP understands that Royals star Matthew Bryan-Amaning remains unsigned for next season and might not return to the capital club.

The GB international, league sources say, has not yet been offered terms for an optional second season on his deal and is effectively a free agent.

Wes Washpun, whose stay with the Royals was interrupted by a visa issue, has also confirmed his exit.
