Chantel Charles is the fresh face in Chema Buceta’s GB squad for next week’s EuroBasket qualifiers with Poland and Belarus.

The Spain-based guard, plus Durham’s Nicolette Fong Lyee Quee, are added to the 12 which reached the semi-finals of EuroBasket Women in July, with Buceta able to call on Turkish based duo Temi Fagbenle and Jo Leedham for what will also serve a tune-ups for February’s Olympic qualifiers.

GB go into the three-team group on a high after their summer exploits.

“We face the challenge of a new European campaign with humility and focus on things that we can do, fighting wisely game by game, trusting and supporting each other all the way,” he said.

“This was our strategy to be able to compete at high level in last EuroBasket, and this has to be again our main weapon.

“Both Poland and Belarus are countries with strong tradition in international women basketball, and we will have to play very good defense and wise offense to be able to beat them. This is only the beginning of a new campaign, but we want to start strong to be in a good position to qualify for next EuroBasket.”

The team travel to Walbrzych for the opening fixture of the qualifiers on Thursday 14 November to face Poland, prior to hosting Belarus at the English Basketball Performance Centre in Manchester on Sunday 17.
