Joel Freeland – team owner?

The Great Britain forward, still not yet officially retired despite playing his last game for CSKA Moscow over three years ago, has emerged as the key figure in a consortium attempting to take over Spanish ACB side Gran Canaria.

Still only 33 years old, he spent four years at the former EuroLeague outfit between 2005-9 before firstly moving to Malaga and then onto the NBA with the Portland Trail Blazers.

Now dividing his time between Spain and the UK, he admits “I’m still enthused being around Granca (sic).”

And the leader of the takeover bid group, Pepon Artiles, said: “Behind Gran Canaria are a group of Canarian business people and also Joel Freeland. The meetings are going well.”

Freeland recently confirmed plans to open basketball academies in Gran Canaria and the UK, where he was a regular fixture around Surrey Scorchers in recent months before lockdown began.

“I want to give as much back to basketball as it’s given to me,” he told La Provincia. “There are interesting plans.”
