Former Great Britain and NBA forward Luol Deng was granted an OBE for services to basketball in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Former British Basketball Federation boss Lisa Wainwright also got a deserved MBE for services to sport when the list was unveiled on Friday night.

Deng, a two-time NBA All Star with the Chicago Bulls, retired from playing two years ago having ended his international career following the London 2021 Olympics.

“I’m truly honoured to be awarded with the Order of British Empire joining such a prestigious group of people,” said Deng, now based in his native homeland of South Sudan as its  basketball federation’s president.

“I will always be thankful for the opportunity provided by the UK for me and my family as a refugee.”
