Newcastle Eagles have parted ways with Chris Bunten – less than two weeks before the WBBL Cup final.

It follows the abrupt departures of a number of senior players earlier this month.

A club statement said the move “recognises the need for a new direction during the second half of the season” despite Bunten’s admirable record in leading the Eagles to this month’s Cup showpiece against London Lions plus last season’s Playoff final, and his anchor role over eight years that saw Team Northumbria survive the threat of evaporation and join the Eagles organisation.

Bunten said: “I will always hold the club close to my heart and wish both the BBL and WBBL teams the very best for the future.”

Paul Blake, Managing Director, Newcastle Eagles, added: “The club would like to thank Chris for his years of service and wish him all the best in the future.”
