FREELAND BLAST CAN’T STOP RUSSIANS

Great Britain men’s team lost 76-54 to Russia in Houston on Thursday evening to fall to 0-4 in their warm-up games for the Olympics.

The Brits took the game to Russia, who again were at full strength but ultimately, the experience and overall depth of the EuroBasket bronze medallists showed as GB coach Chris Finch continues to evaluate his roster.

Surrey-born Joel Freeland led all scorers as he posted 18 points, five rebounds and four assists in a solid all-round performance while Pops Mensah-Bonsu, on his GB debut this summer, was in the starting five and played 10 minutes scoring two.

Finch’s men were 28-26 in front at half-time.

However, Russia hit back with CSKA Moscow forward Andrei Kirilenko and Vitally Fridzon scoring frequently, supported by Viktor Khryapa.

And although, GB finished the quarter strong but were behind 51-41 heading into the last period and could not recover.

Kirilenko led Russia with 16 points.

Team GB will complete their Texas training camp with a game against Lithuania on Friday evening.
